CFD analysis of NOx reduction by natural gas added to coal combustion

    Abstract

    The reduction of NOx emission by the reburning mechanism using natural gas added to coal-fired utility boiler of Israel Electric Corp (IEC) was studied. The reburning mechanism was activated in the flame field when a reducing environment was present; this could be achieved by adding natural gas or other fuels to the flame. An important aspect is to assess the retrofitting required in existing IEC boilers by replacing a fraction of the coal by natural gas. This would also allow purchasing coal with a wide range of parameters, which might be cost effective. Mixed gas-coal burning would benefit both economically and environmentally. Extensive simulations have shown that there is a significant reduction of NOx emission, with addition of relatively small amounts of gas fuel. In parallel, experiments in a coal-fired test facility of 50 kw were conducted that indicated exactly the same trends of NO reduction when LPG was fired downstream in the coal furnace.
