Chemical drinking water standards, an example of guesswork?

Abstract

Apart from a few well-known toxic elements such as fluoride, chemical standards for water are based exclusively on non-medical and non-physiological parameters such as corrosion, taste and furring in pipes. In view of the physiological changes which can be brought about by large intakes of sodium, magnesium, sulphates and calcium, as well as other ions, it would seem advisable to make new standards based on research into body tolerance of these ions. Special requirements for infants, pregnant women, and those suffering from cardiac, renal and liver disease should be formulated.
