Abstract

Al atoms diluted in a buffer gas were reacted with F2, Cl 2, Br2, I2, NF3, and SF6 producing chemiluminescent flames. Emission from the α3Π to the ground Χ1Σ+ state of AlX(Χ = F, Cl, Br, I) and from higher electronic states of AlF and AlCl has been observed. Bands of NF and N2 were emitted from Al+NF3 reaction. A1 lines were observed from all reaction mixtures except A1+I2, and it is suggested that A1 atoms are excited by energy transfer from metastable molecules formed in the reactions. Photon yields were 2% for Al+NF3 and less than 0.01% for Al+F2, Cl2, Br2, I2, and SF6.
