Abstract

1. Dynamic PMR methods have been used to study the cis-trans transitions in the 2-trialkylgermoxy-2-penten-4-ones and their Si analogs. Initiation of these reactions is through C=O → Ge ≡ intermolecular coordination in the free state and through nucleophiiic interaction with a donor solvent in solution. The equilibrium constant for the complexing of Bu3Ge(acac) with pyridine has been determined. 2. The rate of the cis-trans transition in the acetylacetonates is determined by steric factors and by the tendency of the Ge and Si atoms to coordinational saturation.
