Abstract

Combined modulation techniques allow for the transmission of two independent data streams over the same optical carrier. In wavelength-division-multiplexed networks, combined modulation techniques can be used to establish separate logical networks for control and payload transmission over the same physical network with a single transmitter. Promising modulation pairs are amplitude and phase, and amplitude and frequency modulations: both yield good receiver sensitivities with sufficient system power budget for over 50 nodes.
