Abstract
A theoretical investigation is made of the dynamic tensor of the dielectric permittivity ∈ij(ω) in magnetic crystals with Jahn-Teller (JT) clusters of 3d-mixed valence ions. It is shown that coexistence in such clusters of an appreciable dipole and unquenched orbital momenta leads to an anomalous growth of antisymmetric tensor components and Faraday rotation (FR) and magnetic circular dichroism (MCD). These effects take place in the infrared and far-infrared regions of the spectrum. FR and MCD are characterized by anisotropy and strong dependence upon the distribution and strength of random crystal fields on JT clusters. It is shown also that significant magneto-electric effects can take place in these mixed-valence systems.
