Abstract

Background: Abrin is a type of ribosome-inactivating protein that inhibits eukaryotic protein synthesis which leads to apoptosis and cell death. Abrin is isolated from the plant Abrus precatorius L. (A. precatorius) it is a valuable plant from the family Fabaceae. It is commonly known as Gunja or Jequirity, it is found easily throughout India mainly Himalaya to Southern India and Ceylon. Abrin is the compound that provides toxicity to the plant. Objective: A. precatorius has many essential chemical compounds one of them is abrin, which is highly potent for the treatment of cancer. The objective of this review is to provide a retrospective study based on its anti-cancer potential. Results: Recent studies of Abrin are based on the characterization, and pharmacological evaluation. Abrin possesses significant anti-cancer, anti-tumor, apoptosis, and cytotoxic activities against various cancer cell lines. Conclusion: The present review summarizes the anti-cancer potential of Abrin. However, extensive research is required to establish it as a potent chemotherapeutic agent.
