Abstract

A compression algorithm for the ECG signal is proposed. The algorithm estimates structural features of the PQRST complex which are vector-quantized to provide relatively high compression ratios. The quality of the reconstructed signal - the "diagnostability" - cannot be defined and evaluated mathematically. The results are therefore evaluated by expert cardiologists. The algorithm has been tested on an ECG data base acquired in a coronary intensive care unit with the goal of providing an efficient compression system for monitoring and data storage applications.
