Abstract
Mathematical software packages (such as MATLAB and POLYMATH) are currently used in mathematical modelling and simulation courses, in addition to commercial process simulators, to ensure extensive involvement of the students in the modelling aspects of process simulation. Computer based exams (CBE) are utilised to provide the students immediate feedback on their mistakes, to enable them to achieve mastery of the material learned. CBE also ensures that the assignments are completed individually. The effort required from the instructor is usually less than when using traditional exams because the grading of CBE is done mainly by the computer. Definite improvement in the problem solving skills of all the students was observed after introducing CBE to modelling and simulation courses.
