Abstract
Nanotechnology has revolutionized various scientific disciplines, including dentistry, by enabling precise and efficient approaches to diagnosing, treating, and preventing dental diseases. The unique properties of nanomaterials, such as nanoparticles (NPs), nanocomposites (NCs), and nanofibers (NFs), have significantly enhanced restorative, preventive, and regenerative dental treatments. These materials exhibit exceptional biocompatibility, mechanical durability, and a high surface-to-volume ratio, making them ideal for various dental applications. For instance, hydroxyapatite and calcium phosphate nanoparticles aid in enamel remineralization and caries prevention, while nanostructured adhesives and coatings improve the longevity of dental restorations by reducing biofilm formation. Beyond restorative dentistry, nanotechnology plays a crucial role in regenerative medicine, offering advanced solutions for dental tissue engineering. Nanocarriers enable targeted drug delivery, controlled growth factor release, and gene therapy, optimizing therapeutic outcomes while minimizing systemic side effects. Additionally, nanoparticle-based biomaterials and nanoscaffolds support the regeneration of dental pulp, periodontal ligament, and alveolar bone by providing an ideal microenvironment for cellular growth and differentiation. Despite its promising applications, the integration of nanotechnology into clinical dentistry faces challenges, including concerns about the long-term safety and biocompatibility of nanomaterials, potential cytotoxicity, and the need for standardized clinical protocols. Economic and ethical considerations further impact its widespread adoption. This chapter explores the transformative role of nanotechnology in dentistry, detailing its applications, benefits, and challenges. Through continued research and interdisciplinary collaboration, nanotechnology holds immense potential to advance patient-centered dental care and shape the future of oral healthcare.
