Abstract

An experimental and theoretical phenomenological study of accelerating-decelerating bubbles condensing in an immiscible liquid was conducted. The system consisted of a column of water and bubbles of freon-113. The bubbles were collapsing while accelerating up to their highest velocity, then decelerating towards the top of their path, and finally falling down as droplets. Shadowgraphing of the process has illustrated the boundary layer and wake formation behind the bubble, wake shedding, and forward movement of shed vortices on bubble deceleration.
