Abstract

Conical light emission is observed when an intense quasi-resonant laser beam propagates in an atomic vapor. A model of Cherenkov radiation by laser-induced moving polarization was previously proposed to account for the origin and angular/spectral dependencies of the conical emission. The authors provide results on conical emission in Na supporting the Cherenkov-type radiation model. The forward light spectrum for a 15-ns laser pulse blue-detuned with respect to the D2 line at [Na]= 4.8 × 1015 cm-3 is shown. For certain laser detunings the conical emission has a small component on the red side of the D1 line. This observation is interpreted as strong evidence that the conical emission can be explained by the Cherenkov model.
