Abstract

We discuss the consequences of two direct mechanisms originating from relativistic effects inducing radiative intercombinations which do not involve the spin-orbit harmiltionian. The importance of these mechanisms for aromatic hydrocarbons is demonstrated. Estimates for 3E1u-1A1g radiative transitions in benzene show that the direct mechanisms modify the rate by ±20% and ±25% for the two photon polarizations.
