Abstract

This research has focused on understanding the correlation between the raw material, processes, microstructure and corrosion behavior of AM50 magnesium sheet. The magnesium sheets were produced by warm rolling of either die cast or ingot cast plates and included two rolling procedures: unidirectional and bidirectional (cross rolling). The method of insitu electrochemical measurements in combination with mechanical tests was developed and demonstrated in order to study the stress corrosion behavior under simulated conditions. The magnesium sheets were exposed to 3.5 % NaCl solution with Mg(OH)2, PH= 10.5 in room temperature. The ingot cast materials exhibited better corrosion resistance than the die cast materials in both the as-cast and as-rolled conditions.
