Abstract
The crystallinity in membranes and fibres prepared by sulphochlorination of low-density polyethylene was determined by an X-ray diffraction method. A considerable decrease in the crystallinity was detected as the sulphochlorination reaction proceeded. The rate of decomposition of crystalline phase was strongly influenced by the degree of perfection of the polyethylene crystals and was much greater that the less-perfect crystals in the cold-drawn fibres than for more perfect crystals in sheets.
