Crystals in constant electric fields-two distinct configurations

Abstract

It is shown that two physically different configurations lead to the same 'crystal in a constant electric field'. Although the short-time description of localised packets in the two configurations can be connected by a gauge transformation, this is impossible for the steady-state features which are fundamentally different.
