Abstract
The reactions 40Ca(τ, τ′α)36Ar and 40Ca(τ, τ′p)39K were used to study the decay properties of the giant resonance region of 40Ca at Eτ ≈ 70 MeV. Both processes are found to proceed via two intermediate distinct resonances at excitation energies Ex = 14.5 MeV and 18.0 MeV in 40MeV resonances isoscalar giant quadropole resonance, is found to decay strongly by α-particle and proton emission with an observed ratio of Γp/Γα r{fish-hook} 1.0±0.2. Only a small fraction of the total observed decay strength (≈ 13% for the α-particle mode and ≈9% for the p mode) is due to ground-state transitions.
