Abstract

Aqueous solutions of the polyoxometalate Na4.9+2[SiV 0.9MoW10.1O40] were used to delignify lodgepole pine and Douglas-fir kraft and soda-anthraquinone pulps from Kappa numbers of 70 down to Kappa number 30. The results were compared with kraft pulps from the same wood species pulped to Kappa number 30. The purpose of this work was to quantify the effects of the polyoxometalate delignification on the yields and strengths of the resulting bleachable grade pulps. The pulps that were POM-delignified were strong and had significantly higher yields than the kraft pulps. For both wood species, the POM-delignified kraft pulp gave results clearly superior to the other methods, with the highest yield and the highest viscosity.
