Abstract

Dysmorphophobia, a brief and exaggerated concern with an imagined or negligible defect in physical appearance, has been divided by DSM-IV into two separate disorders. When the disturbance attains delusional intensity the proper diagnosis is delusional disorder of the somatic subtype. For the non-delusional cases, DSM-IV created the category of BodyDystnorphic Disorder (BDD). Two cases of delusianal disorder, somatic subtype, are described which were successfully treated with fluvoxamine. The validity of this DSM-IV diagnostic entity is thus questioned.
