Abstract

A new water based organic-inorganic nano hybrid resin was synthesised through sol-gel technique by using alkoxysilane modified acrylic resin, silane monomer and chitosan as functional components. The uniqueness of this process is the incorporation of chitosan via in situ hydrolysis-condensation reaction of silane modified acrylic resin and methyl triethoxy silane in aqueous basic medium. The formation of nano silica and their bonding with chitosan in acrylic matrix has been confirmed by spectroscopic and SEM analysis. The coating based on such hybrid polymer exhibited excellent antibacterial activity, hydrophobicity and formaldehyde absorption ability. Such innovative bio-based resin has potential for application in hygienic interior decorative coating.
