Abstract

A blockchain is an attack-resistant distributed digital ledger used for recording data with features such as decentralization, transparency, and immutability. The extension of this technology to aid the healthcare sector has become a key concern in recent years. The healthcare system aims at storing, sharing, and protecting patient’s data together with improving overall healthcare experiences. With the ever increasing demand for healthcare services a robust information technology system to remove middlemen is the need of the hour. Healthcare industry challenges such as fragmented data, system interoperability, timely access to patient data, and data security need to be addressed in present time. The blockchain technology can eradicate inconsistencies, duplication, and errors. This book chapter will focus on various aspects of blockchain such as introduction to blockchain, their application in healthcare sector, benefits and challenges of this technology in healthcare sector.
