Abstract
A group of children with recurrent spasmodic croup (RSC) and allergic family history were randomly assigned to one of two treatment groups: one group was treated with dimethpyrindene maleate (DM) and the other received placebo. DM was shown to bring about a clinical improvement. The mean length of hospital stay was shorter in the DM-treated group, than in the placebo group (p < 0.01). DM-treated patients with high levels of immunoglobulin E (IgE) showed the best response, the best clinical response and the shortest length of hospital stay. DM-treated patients with normal levels of IgE gained almost no benefit from the treatment. DM administered per os speeded up the recovery of infants and children with acute uncomplicated attacks of RC, especially in allergy-prone cases.
