Abstract
The cam and the machine which produces it comprise together a dynamic mechanism. This combination has inaccuracies which are expressed in the cam profile. A machine such as a milling machine, has inaccuracies inherent in the characteristics of the milling spike, etc. This results in a cam profile which is unsuitable for the required exact form. This inaccuracy is one of the factors causing the movement, and especially the velocity and acceleration to behave differently from the planned action. Since the inertia forces in the mechanism are in proportion to the acceleration, undesirable forces are created. These forces cause fatigue in the machine, fast wear, noises, undesirable vibration and limited speed. As a result productivity is lessened. The mechanism response is investigated and improvements are suggested to keep undesirable vibrations to a minimum.
