Abstract
Drug metabolism was investigated in spontaneously hypertensive rats in vivo and in vitro. Glucuronyl transferase activity in vitro was lower in spontaneously hypertensive rats than normotensive rats, while oxidative drug metabolizing enzyme were not different. On the other hand, in vivo oxidative metabolism was higher in spontaneously hypertensive rats than in normotensive rats as measured by hexobarbital sleeping time. The possible contribution of hemodynamic factors that occur in the hypertensive state to the higher rate of drug oxidation in vivo is discussed.
