Abstract
Recent calculations and comparison with experimental results have suggested that the time history of the propagation of axial cracks in pressurized pipes made of very tough and very ductile steel may be determined by combining the crack tip opening angle fracture criterion with the calculated opening shape of a split ring. These results were for pipes of uniform thickness and were based upon small deflection theory. This paper examines the effects of nonuniform wall thickness and of large deflection theory.
