Abstract

An experimental and theoretical study of a pentane bubble condensing in water was conducted. Shape, size, and path of the bubble were video-taped. Entrainment of a coloured layer was photographically recorded to visualize the flow field outside the bubble. Shadowgraphing was applied to illustrate the thermal phenomena in the boundary layer, and wake. Most of the bubble collapse took place in the zone of acceleration. The collapse proceeded and terminated in the adjacent zone of deceleration. Formulations for the 4-5 mm pentane bubble based on the assumption of a rigid surface agreed well with the experimental collapse rate and path.
