abstract = "The two-spotted spider mite (TSSM; Tetranychus urticae Koch) feeds on the underside of leaves, piercing the chloroplast-containing cells and causing significant damage to crops in fields, as well as in greenhouses. It is hypothesized that under the optimal plant growth conditions available in greenhouses, spectral monitoring of the upper leaves can lead to TSSM-damage identification even in the early stages of infestation. This study examined the spectral reflectance data of greenhouse pepper (Capsicum annuum) leaves at four TSSM damage levels. Vegetation indices were calculated and shown to reliably correspond to damage levels. The partial least squares discriminant analysis classification method was applied and resulted in 100% classification success for early damage detection. Therefore, consistent separation between increasing TSSM damage levels can be provided, and early identification of TSSM greenhouse pepper leaf damage can be obtained by spectral means under laboratory conditions. The potential of using spectral identification in commercial greenhouses is discussed.",
