physician, and politician, studied the chemical composition of brain, the nature of the active principle of senna and boldo, the electrolysis of many acids and organic salts, the role of water in electrolysis, the solubility of organic acids in water and other solvents, and described the preparation and properties of many new bromine derivatives. In the last part of his life, he actively opposed Louis Pasteur’s ideas and the teaching of practical laboratory experiences.
