Abstract
Calcitonin, given intravenously in pharmacological doses, has been shown to depress the enzyme output in panc reatic juice in man. As endoscopic retrograde cholangiopancreatography (ERCP) is complicated by hyperamylasemia in 20-40% of procedures and by pancreatitis in 1-2% (3, 7), one could speculate that calcitonin pancreatic might provide protection against pancreatitis and prevent the rise in serum amylase. A double-blind study of the effect of calcitonin in patients referred to us for ERCP was thus undertaken. Calcitonin or placebo was infused in a double-blind study in 30 patients undergoing endoscopic retrograde cholangiopancreatography. Calcitonin was found to have no significant effect on the hyperamylasemia following this procedure.
