Abstract
The influence of rare earth (CeO2 and Sm) additions on the corrosion behavior of hot-pressed and sintered stainless steel (H.P.S.S.) of type 316 was investigated by SEM observation, open-circuit potential measurements during immersion testing and potentiodynamic polarization. It was found that the CeO2 and Sm additions did not react with the austenitic matrix during the hot pressing and sintering processes and remain as inclusions. The pore morphology of the hot pressed and sintered stainless steel was not significantly affected by the CeO2 and Sm additions. The corrosion resistance of the hot pressed and sintered stainless steel was not improved by the CeO2 and Sm additions.
