Abstract

The application of pressure to quasi-(d-1)-dimensional systems increases the effective dimensionality of their fluctuations. This is shown to turn fluctuation-driven continuous phase transitions into first-order ones via tricritical points. The resulting pressure dependence of the magnetic field-temperature phase diagrams of metamagnets is accordingly described.
