Abstract
A formal description of electron flow through membranes is given, including the definition of the electron transport number,τε{lunate}. The effect of electron transfer on the membrane potential is worked out and the relevance of the membrane potential to the redox potentials in the aqueous phase is discussed. Conditions for the maintenance of a stationary state as well as for conversion of free energy between electron and ion transport are analysed. The relevant points are exemplified with a simple, but fully accessible, experimental system.
