Abstract

Emission from electronically excited Bi, Bi2 and BiO is observed in Bi/O2(1Δ, 1Σ) mixtures. Excitation mechanisms are inferred from the dependence of the emission intensity on [Bi] and Bi[2]. It is concluded that the strong emission from Bi(2D 3 2) originates from pumping of the 4S 3 2 ground state by O2(1Σ) which, in turn, is produced via multiple collisions of O2(1Δ) with Bi2.
