N2 - Reasoning about mechanisms is a core of science education, however, more research is needed into the degree of mechanistic details that should be unpacked to support learning. In this study, we analyze two case studies of laypersons with diabetes engaging with agent-based models that represent glucose-equilibrium processes. Our analysis revealed that incomplete mechanistic representations triggered a sense of dissonance but involved strong emotional engagement. Implementations are discussed.
