Abstract

The Hindu Kush Himalayan (HKH) people have a long history that has shaped their development into today's societies and has contributed to their unique ethnic cultural traditions. However, it is not accidental that the HKH countries face common environmental problems, as they share the same geographical and climatic conditions. In this chapter, we describe the connection between the historical environmental problems during the development history and the current cultural, social and economic statuses of the ethnic peoples in the HKH region. The evolution, driving factors and the prospect of solutions to the environmental problems are discussed.
