Evaluating the influence of planning horizons on the manufacturing lead time of parts in multi-robot workcells

Abstract

Planning horizon is defined as the forward time window for which the incoming products are known. Its influence on manufacturing lead time (MLT) has been previously studied for systems with non-negligible setup times. Multirobot workcells have negligible setup times and are therefore inherently different. This paper evaluates the effect of planning horizon on MLT in various multi-robot workcells. Simulation results indicate that increased planning horizons improve MLT only for non-stationary part arrival rates. Both system load and flexibility have a statistically significant interaction with the planning horizon. A test case closely modeled after an actual production system, was analyzed both in simulation and in hardware and revealed similar results.
