Abstract

Investigations of both vacuum and plasma loaded backward wave oscillators (BWOs) were carried out. The start oscillation current was measured for the first time in a vacuum BWO (<140 A at 600 kV). The enhanced peak efficiency of a plasma loaded BWO can be maintained even for large beam current, in contrast to the vacuum case. The radiation frequency is only slightly shifted (1-5%) by the presence of the plasma. Currents as high as 75% of the vacuum limit were successfully propagated in the presence of a background plasma. Novel explosive field emission gun designs made it possible to reduce the total beam current to a value below 100 A while still maintaining a good beam uniformity.
