Abstract
This chapter explores the emerging field of explainable ante-hoc approaches for Earth Observation (EO) data analysis, focusing on the opportunities and challenges inherent in this area. As the use of EO data for environmental monitoring, disaster management, agriculture, and climate studies grow, the need for transparent and interpretable models has become paramount. Ante-hoc approaches, which emphasize explainability during the development phase of machine learning models, offer significant advantages over post-hoc methods, enabling users to gain insight into the decision-making processes of models before they are deployed. The chapter discusses various techniques for enhancing model interpretability, including the use of feature importance measures, rule-based methods, and decision trees, as well as the role of domain knowledge in model design. It also highlights the unique challenges associated with EO data, such as high dimensionality, spatial-temporal complexity, and data heterogeneity, which can complicate the creation of explainable models. Furthermore, the chapter addresses potential trade-offs between model accuracy and interpretability, along with the implications for operational decision-making in EO applications. Finally, the chapter outlines future research directions to advance ante-hoc explainability in EO data analysis, stressing the need for interdisciplinary collaboration and innovative methodologies.
