Abstract

A double-bottom structure is composed of a top and bottom plate with two sets of beams serving as a core. A direct method, based on the yield-line approach, for the analysis of flange failure of the structure is presented. The failure mechanism, the ultimate inner moments and axial forces along the yield lines are investigated considering axial, lateral and combined loading. It is shown that the different combinations of lateral and axial loads at failure fit into an interaction diagram. The analysis is simple, can be carried out by hand and is of great help in the design of this complicated structure. Numerical examples of the structure failure loads are presented and are found to be in good agreement with experimental results.
