Abstract

The nonconvex variational problems have been recently used to describe a microstructure in various ordered systems from solid mechanics, typically martensitic crystals. In some occasions one meets the need to control such microstructure; cf., eg,[10). The number of results cummulated recently allows now to develop a quite complete mathematical theory supporting an optimal control of this microstructure in situations where it can be described by a scalar variational problem? like the model problem (VPU) below,
