Abstract

Kirchhoff’s kinetic analogy relates the deformation of an incompressible elastic rod to the classical dynamics of rigid body rotation. We discuss the effects of compressibility on the kinetic analogy and show that they are mathematically equivalent to relativistic effects. We demonstrate the utility of the modified analogy in both directions: (a) the relativistic Lorentz invariance leads to an unexpected
symmetry in the compressible elastic deformation; and (b) the buckling of compressible Euler elastica is used to derive the explicit exact solution for the motion of a relativistic nonlinear pendulum.
