Abstract
The culture of algae for industrial purposes is a novel biotechnology, naturally prompting the question of whether it will ever become an important means of production of food, feeds, and chemicals. The author believes there is solid evidence that the utilization of algae for various economic purposes will gradually develop into an important industrial endeavor, particularly in warm, sunny regions where the water available is unsuitable for the production of conventional agricultural crops.
