Abstract
The homogeneous, gas phase, thermal decomposition of tert-butyl alcohol to isobutene and water was studied in a single-pulse shock tube. The comparative rate technique was used, with the decyclization of cyclohexene to ethylene and 1,3-butadiene serving as the internal standard reaction. Over the temperature range 920- 1175 °K, the comparative rate data for unimolecular tert-butyl alcohol decomposition were fit well by the expression log k (sec-1) = 14.6 - (66.2 ⨯ 103/4.58 T°K).
