Abstract
Contrary to conventional wisdom, global social movements are not a new phenomenon. They are part of the globalization of contentious politics dating back to the mid-nineteenth century. During the last quarter of the twentieth century these movements became prominent and vivid players in the international, national, and local arena (Boli and Thomas 1999; Della Porta et al. 1999; Guidry et al. 2000; Keck and Sikkink 1998; Smith et al. 1997)
