Glycolic Ferment: The Work of Victor Barral and Raphaël Lépine

Research output: Contribution to journalArticlepeer-review

Abstract

Etienne Victor Barral (1860–1938), a French physician and chemist, and Raphaël Lépine (1840– 1919), a French physiologist, discovered after extensive research that the assimilation of sugar in the blood was carried by a glycolytic ferment, produced mainly by the pancreas, without accumulation. Their work and consequences led other researchers to isolate the glycolytic agent known as insulin
afterwards.
