Abstract

We have synthesized a series of new polymeric composite sorbents by gamma-radiation polymerization of vinyl monomers mixed with a liquid or solid extractant on a silica gel base. The high surface area of silica gel enhances the radiation graft polymerization, and immobilization of the organic extractant takes place simultaneously with polymerization. The sorbent consisting of the liquid extractant Alamine 336 immobilized into polydivinylbenzene grafted to the silica was used to study gold sorption from cyanide solutions. The impressive feature of this sorbent was the very fast kinetics of sorption and desorption processes. From dilute solutions (20-50 ppm) about 90% of gold sorption was complete in 1 min.
