Abstract
Groundwater pollution by nitrate, which is associated with excess application of fertilizers in agriculture, is a global threat to water resources availability. Yet, nitrate, as well as other contaminants, has to traverse the unsaturated zone prior to accumulation in the aquifers. Therefore, development of monitoring tools that are capable to provide real-time information on the quality of water percolating in the unsaturated zone is crucial for optimizing fertilizer application and reduce groundwater pollution hazard.
