The papers collected in this feature issue of the European Journal of Operational Research have
been presented at the 14th European Conference on Operational Research, EURO XIV, which was held in Jerusalem from 3-6 July, 1995. Sixteen papers have been selected after a thorough review, from among invited papers presented in the traditional semi-plenary stream. As 1995 was the year of the 20th Anniversary of EURO, the papers were invited specifically to highlight chosen activities of EURO and of some new methodological developments in OR.
The Anniversary Conference gave an opportunity for the EURO Working Groups to present state-ofthe-art reviews in their respective fields, with an emphasis on the specific interest of each group. Six Working Groups are represented in this collection.
They give proof of the vitality of this instrument of EURO. The groups gather hundreds of people around specific topics of OR, systematically, even twice a year since the very beginning of EURO, at maly working meetings.
Some other papers in this issue underline the specific theme of the Conference: OR - Towards
Intelligent Decision Support. Our aim was to stress the impact of Artificial Intelligence, Computer Science, Decision and Information Sciences, and New Technologies on the present trend of OR.
The present feature issue gets also a special flavour thanks to the humorous paper by Dominique de Werra - the 1995 Laureate of the EURO Gold Medal. Due to the unusual form of his address, the
Laureate was able to transmit many interesting views on OR and its place in science.
