Abstract
Special actuators are necessary for high-precision processing and manipulation when relatively high forces are involved. These actuators must possess high stiffness while being able to carry out high-resolution displacements. This work describes a hydraulically driven actuator based on the use of the phenomenon of elastic deformation. The resolution reached by this device is not less than 0.1 μm, while its stiffness is about 1500 N/μm. The application of this actuator as a cutter holder for turning materials is described and other possible applications of the new device are discussed.
