Abstract

The physical, chemical and metallurgical phenomena that can be utilized to assist in materials processing in the presence of hydrogen will be reviewed. With a fundamental understanding of hydrogen behavior in metals and alloys, the use of hydrogen can achieve advances in metal processing and enhance alloy properties. Various processing approaches utilizing hydrogen will be described including thermohydrogen processing, hydrogen decrepitation, hydrogenation-decomposition-desorption-recombination, hydrogen-induced amorphization and microstructure refinement, and hydrogen-assisted metal hot forming.
